The future with hydrogen: a strong signal from the region

A high-calibre specialist event entitled "Hydrogen as the key to the energy transition" was held at the THI. Numerous experts from business, science and administration provided insights into current projects and strategies relating to hydrogen as an energy source - impressively emphasising the importance of the topic for the region.

The focus was on practical applications and visionary approaches: For example, bayernets reported on the planned conversion of existing natural gas infrastructure for future hydrogen networks. Bayernwerk Netz addressed the requirements for electricity grids with highly fluctuating feed-in. IFG Ingolstadt presented specific municipal projects - from zero-emission refuse collection vehicles to H₂ refuelling stations. Freudenberg e-Power Systems presented technological solutions for heavy goods transport. Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik added strategic classifications and sustainability analyses.

A special emphasis was placed on the poster exhibition by THI students, who highlighted power-to-gas concepts, the role of methanol as a carrier medium, operating strategies for energy self-sufficient systems and global cooperation models, among other things. The variety of topics reflected the research drive and innovative spirit of young academics.

"We need solid research, reliable partnerships and practice-oriented solutions to bring hydrogen from the idea into application - this is exactly what we are working on at THI together with stakeholders from the region," emphasised Professor Daniel Großmann, Vice President for Research.

Despite midsummer temperatures, interest in the event was high. The exchange on the THI campus sent a clear signal: the region is ready to play an active role in shaping the future of hydrogen - open to technology, interdisciplinary and networked.
