National Funding Programmes

There are varoious application possibilities for project funding. We have compiled information on important national funding programmes as follows:

The Federal Government funds application-oriented research at the federal level through the federal ministries, within the framework of their respective specialist programmes. Funding can also be provided at the state level by ministries such as the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Arts.

If you have any questions about national research funding or if you plan to write an application, please contact us as early as possible.

Bavarian Collaborative Research Programme (BayVFP)

As part of the Bavarian Collaborative Research Programme (BayVFP), the Free State of Bavaria promotes cooperation between science and industry in the field of industrial research. It supports research and development projects of companies and research institutions cooperating with companies in various areas. The funds are provided by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy.

The Bavarian Collaborative Research Programme BayVFP covers the four technology policy fields of action "Materials", "Life Science", "Digitalisation" and "Mobility". Special attention will also be paid to the interfaces between the fields of action.

Industrial research, experimental development and, in justified exceptions, feasibility studies are eligible for funding.

Depending on the respective programme, companies based or established in the Free State of Bavaria, non-university research institutions as well as universities and higher education institutions in Bavaria and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are eligible to apply.

You can find an overview of the BayVFP programme here
The funding conditions of the project management organisation (in accordance with the guidelines) are set out here.

Federal Funding

The main focus of federal research funding is on maintaining and expanding scientific expertise, strategic technology developments and projects with a particular leverage effect for growth and jobs. Priority is given to research collaborations between scientific institutions and commercial enterprises. The Federal Government's High-Tech Strategy forms the political-strategic foundation for most of the thematic funding programmes.

Federal Ministries

A large part of the Federal Government's research funding is awarded through calls for proposals issued by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMBF). But other ministries also issue calls for research programmes. You can inform about funding programmes from individual ministries under the keyword "Research funding" on the websites of the respective ministries.

The BMWi's Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM) is a federal funding programme that is specially designed to promote economic development. ZIM is a nationwide, technology- and sector-open support programme for medium-sized companies and research institutions cooperating with them. ZIM aims to sustainably support the innovative strength and competitiveness of commercial enterprises and to contribute to their growth, combined with the creation and safeguarding of jobs.

Funding opportunities through the German Research Foundation (DFG)

One of the main objectives of the German Research Foundation (DFG) is to promote cutting-edge research. The DFG primarily funds open-topic projects in the field of knowledge-driven research. It also carries out review procedures, e.g. on behalf of the federal states.

The diverse funding portfolio includes the financing of research projects and research infrastructures as well as networking activities, scholarships and scientific prizes. Depending on the respective programme, both individuals and organisations are eligible to apply.

An overview of the DFG's funding portfolio can be found on the DFG website DFG Website

An important funding instrument in the area of thematic research funding is the research grant. The programme is open to all topics. Researchers who have completed their scientific training (usually a doctorate) and are employed at German research institutions are eligible to apply.

In addition, the DFG also funds thematic projects and international research collaborations as part of temporary calls for proposals
