General information

The database of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides a comprehensive overview of the range of scholarships available abroad: www.auslands-stipendien.de
The database includes both traditional scholarships for students and graduates as well as other funding opportunities for academics and university lecturers.

Scholarships

ERASMUS - The EU education programme for higher education

Target group

Promotion of student mobility (theory semester and internship)

Target country

The partner university of the home university or the host company is located in an EU member state, or in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Norway and Turkey.

Object of funding

  • 3 to 12-month stay abroad or 2 to 12-month internship abroad
  • 2 days - 6 weeks for staff or lecturer mobility

Application deadlines

Theory semester:
A separate application for the Erasmus scholarship is not necessary. Every student who completes a semester of study at an Erasmus PHS receives a scholarship within the framework of the Erasmus guidelines.

Internship:
Continuous application possible. The documents must be submitted in good time BEFORE the start of the internship.

PROMOS - DAAD funding for 2025

Target group

Promoting the mobility of regular full-time students (Master/Bachelor)

Target country

The scholarships are awarded for study-related stays (study and internship) in Asia, Africa, Australia or (Latin) America.

Object of funding

Partial scholarships or travel allowances for internships and studies abroad in the amount of the applicable country-specific scholarship rates and travel allowances of the DAAD.

Application deadlines

PROMOS is advertised twice a year; once for stays in the summer semester and once for stays in the winter semester.

For stays in the summer semester: 15 February of the year of the stay

For stays in the winter semester: 15 June of the year of the stay

Travel grants from the Free State of Bavaria 2025

Target group

Funding for German students who have completed a semester of study at a host university or a compulsory internship outside Europe in the summer semester 2025 and/or winter semester 2025/26. International students can only be funded if the stay abroad serves their study progress at THI.

In the call for applications you will find all information including an overview of the documents to be submitted. Please download the application form and the confirmation of self-financing (only for interns!).

Destination country

The stay must take place outside Europe. For a stay abroad in the Erasmus area, the travel grant can only be applied for if funding via Erasmus is excluded.

Object of funding

  • Travel grant verifiable by invoice of the ticket; maximum funding of € 500 each for outward and return flight
  • Subsistence allowance depending on country group (see call for applications) for 3 months

Application deadline

The travel grant is only advertised once a year. The application deadline for stays abroad in the summer semester 2025 and/or winter semester 2025/26 is 19 May to 15 June retroactively for stays in the summer semester of the same year and in advance for the winter semester of the same year.

Fulbright Commission

Purpose of the scholarship

The purpose of the scholarships is to further study at recognised (accredited) American universities in the USA at the graduate level (Master's/PhD).

Target group

High-achieving German students and graduates of universities and universities of applied sciences who are able to actively promote German-American cultural exchange in addition to their studies in the USA.

  • Applications should be sent directly to the Fulbright Commission in Berlin.
  • Fulbright Commission:
    Applicants who are completing a full study programme abroad at the time of the scholarship application or are no longer enrolled at a German university should send their complete application documents directly to the Fulbright Commission: Fulbright Commission, Lützowufer 26, 10787 Berlin.
DAAD: Semester stays and theses for students

Students in Bachelor's, Master's and Diploma programmes at German HAW/FH receive scholarships for a stay abroad as part of their studies or thesis.

Mobility grants and scholarships for subject-related study visits; funding can be applied for 1-2 semesters abroad.

Support for advanced students and doctoral candidates at Bavarian universities in the preparation of academic theses (e.g. Diplom, Magister, Bachelor, Master or doctoral theses) in China

The funding amount is determined on the basis of the cost plan submitted.

  • Travelling expenses
  • Visa fees
  • Health and liability insurance
  • Vaccinations
  • Accommodation costs (amounting to a daily flat rate of €10)

BayInd - Promotion of study visits to India

Target group

Object of funding

The Bavarian-Indian Centre for Business and Universities (BayIND) awards bi-annual scholarships for stays in India for study, internships and for writing academic papers.

Application deadlines

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and applicants will be notified of decisions via BayIND.

Scope of funding

All scholarships are one-off lump sum scholarships in the amount of

  • Study: €1,300
  • Internship: € 1,000
  • Academic work: € 2,000

BFHZ - Scholarships for study visits, research stays and internships in France

Target group

Mobility grants for students from Bavarian universities who are planning a study visit to France

Object of funding

  • Mobility grants in the form of scholarships for study visits (max. 10 months) as well as research visits and internships (1-3 months).
  • The grant amounts to €250 per month

BayFor - Support programmes for students within the framework of the Bavaria-Québec partnership

Bavarian students and doctoral candidates (universities and universities of applied sciences)

  • 10 mobility grants per year for short-term stays of 3-4 weeks and study visits
  • Depending on the type and duration of the stay: € 1,200 to € 4,300

Metropolises in Europe

Full funding for a stay abroad in Eastern Europe lasting at least 7 months

Object of funding

Language acquisition, studies and/or internships, also in combination. Funding between 7 months and 2 years. Funding abroad for up to two years also makes it possible to complete a Master's degree programme abroad.

In addition to financial support for language acquisition and stays abroad from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, the Studienstiftung provides a network of contacts. After returning to Germany, students who perform well will be transferred to the Studienstiftung's domestic funding programme, which is dependent on parental income. Please note: The programme is not aimed at doctoral students.
